Be Brave. Be Courageous.

That was our theme for Spark a Smile in October as we created these 198 great postcards for the American Cancer Society! Our theme was PINK, in honor of breast cancer awareness month. It was totally fitting that we were joined for the first time by a group of 11 to 15-year-old girls from a local church youth group. We gave them several different designs and some samples, but their creativity couldn’t be contained! Click here to see each of the unique cards that these girls created.

Here are some closeups. Aren’t these quotes encouraging? (Found them on Pinterest, and was inspired by both the quotes and the typography to create my own word art.)

“Happy girls are the prettiest.” – Audrey Hepburn

“Be-you-tiful”

“May you always find the light within and have the courage to take a chance.”

And my favorite… “Be strong when you are weak, Brave when you are scared, and humble when you are victorious.”

It was a little louder than usual at our October party (with all those chatty girls :)) but we loved having them! Their youth group leader, Miss Teena, sent me an email a few days later: “Thank you, thank you! We had so much fun.  The girls couldn’t stop talking and giggling in the cars as we drove them home.  This is a wonderful idea.”

When I delivered them to the American Cancer Society, c/o MIss Dani at 21st Century Oncology of Casa Grande, she was so touched. She immediately delivered a card to a patient who was undergoing chemotherapy at the time, and excitedly shared the cards with all the staff members in the office. We also shared the stack of cards with a lady who was waiting for a friend in treatment, and invited her to take a card.

The first person who came to her mind wasn’t her friend with cancer, but she wanted to share a card with another friend who was going through a rough patch in life… not our intended recipient, but definitely someone who could use a smile! I was amazed at the impact that our cards can have on our community, and how versatile such a simple card can be. It’s awesome to be a part of this beautiful project!

Join us next Wednesday, November 14th, from 5-7PM at Yang and Horsley Dentistry (325 E. Cottonwood Lane) as we make goodies for the annual Seeds of Hope/St. Vincent’s/Salvation Army/Home of Hope Thanksgiving dinner! They’re feeding close to 300 people this year, so we need your help!
